No Place Like (a new) Home
With clients either located all over the United States, or clients with second or third homes or investment properties, I have done a good share of moving and relocating organization or new installation organizing. Now that spring is well underway and summer just around the corner, the peak moving season has started. The Census Bureau has estimated that more than 70+ million people will relocate this year. If you are considering a relocation, here are some easy tips to keep in mind to help make your move a little smoother and safer.
1. Today there’s only one way budgets and estimates go and that’s up. No matter how much time you plan you will need for your move, overestimate it again. It almost always takes longer than expected.
2. Don’t use old, worn boxes for packing. Many storage companies sell sturdy corrugated boxes in various sizes. To save money, you can arrange with your friendly liquor-store owner or market to pick up their clean, discarded heavy-duty cartons.
3. Don’t use oversize boxes and don’t over pack any boxes. Tightly pad your possessions so they won’t shift within the box and get damaged. No box should weigh more than 50 pounds.
4. Select one room in the house or garage where all the boxes will be placed prior to the move to decrease carrying and loading time.
5. Number and label all the boxes so that at the new location it is easy to check off an inventory list and see if everything has arrived. Labeling also makes it efficient for movers to put boxes in the intended room.
6. Organize and pack those “first night” boxes for each member of the family. Include snacks, toiletries, water, medications, tools and a change of clothes. Proper packing and planning makes for an easier and successful relocation.
